The Fire

The Inferno That Deprived Copenhagen of Its Rich Heritage

The Børsen inferno that transpired on 16 April gave a devastating blow to the rich heritage of Copenhagen. Much of the building’s 17th-century structures, including the dragon-tail spire, were destroyed in the flames that popped in the course of renovations.

The city, together with its officials, mourned the loss, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen terming it Denmark’s tragic day. Passers-by, museum conservators, soldiers, and emergency workers demonstrated a lot of courage by running into the building to salvage hundreds of artworks over four centuries old. Other than the bust sculpture of King Christian IV of Denmark that weighed more than two tonnes, the rescuers saved most of the historic items.

What’s Next After the Børsen Inferno

Following the tragic event, Denmark will not sit by and watch its cultural heritage disappear into ashes. The country is determined to restore Børsen, even though it seems like a difficult challenge, but experts have advised it is doable.

Friends of Børsen is welcoming help from around the world to aid in the efforts of restoration. We aim to restore the original structure as much as possible. The inferno has spurred not just a nationwide, but a global, effort to rebuild and improve the safety standards of Børsen.
