About Børsen
When Børsen, a marvel of the Danish Renaissance, sadly caught fire on 16 April 2024, many people showed up to help rescue historic paintings from the iconic building. These people relentlessly gave their all to ensure many items that hold historical significance, including P.S. Krøyer’s 1895 paintings, are rescued.
Concerned about the risk of losing the rich cultural heritage established by Børsen for centuries, these concerned parties went ahead to create a mission to restore the iconic building’s lost glory. The group comprising corporate executives, historians, business persons, and Scandinavians, collectively formed the Friends of Børsen.
The Fire of April 14th
On a seemingly ordinary Tuesday morning, tragedy struck when a severe fire erupted at Børsen, causing extensive damage to this historic edifice. The flames not only threatened the structural integrity of the building but also endangered countless irreplaceable artifacts housed within its walls.
Our Response
In the wake of this disaster, Friends of Børsen was born—a newly established international nonprofit organization dedicated to gathering resources to restore Børsen to its original glory. Our mission has never been more critical. Working closely with local authorities, heritage experts, and Dansk Erhverv, the building’s current custodian, we are committed to ensuring that the restoration honors the building’s historical and cultural significance.
About Børsen
Located on Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Børsen is not just a building but a landmark steeped in the history of Denmark. Constructed in 1625 under the reign of King Christian IV, this iconic structure served as a center for commerce, showcasing the economic prowess of a nation at the crossroads of Northern Europe. The building’s most distinctive feature, its spire, composed of four intertwined dragon tails topped with three crowns, symbolizes the historic union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Over the centuries, Børsen has stood as a testament to Danish architectural ingenuity and a beacon of prosperity.
